How to Install an eSIM on iPhone & Android (Step by Step)

Installing an eSIM is surprisingly simple — it takes under 5 minutes on both iPhone and Android. Here's exactly how to do it, step by step.

Before you start

Make sure you have:

  • A phone that supports eSIM (iPhone XS or later, Samsung Galaxy S20+, Google Pixel 3a+)
  • A stable Wi-Fi or data connection (needed to download the eSIM profile)
  • Your eSIM QR code (emailed to you after purchase from roamsim)

Tip: You can install your eSIM at home before your trip. Just don't enable the data line until you arrive at your destination.

Installing on iPhone

Step 1: Open Settings

Go to Settings → Cellular (or Mobile Data in some regions).

Step 2: Add eSIM

Tap Add eSIM (or "Add Cellular Plan" on older iOS versions). Then select Use QR Code.

Step 3: Scan your QR code

Point your camera at the QR code from your roamsim confirmation email. Your iPhone will detect and download the eSIM profile automatically.

Step 4: Label your plan

When asked which line to use for data, select your new eSIM plan. Keep your primary line for calls and texts. Turn on Data Roaming for the eSIM line under Settings → Cellular → your eSIM plan.

Step 1: Open Settings

Go to Settings → Connections → SIM Manager (Samsung) or Settings → Network & Internet → SIMs (Pixel/stock Android).

Step 2: Add eSIM

Tap Add eSIM or Download SIM. Select the option to scan a QR code.

Step 3: Scan your QR code

Scan the QR code from your roamsim confirmation email. The phone will download and install the eSIM profile.

Step 4: Enable the eSIM

Toggle the new eSIM on and set it as your mobile data line. Make sure Data Roaming is enabled for the eSIM line.

Troubleshooting common issues

  • "eSIM not supported" — Check that your phone model supports eSIM and your carrier hasn't locked the feature
  • QR code won't scan — Try increasing screen brightness on the device showing the QR code, or enter the activation code manually
  • No data connection — Make sure Data Roaming is enabled for your eSIM line and you're in the coverage country
  • "Plan already installed" — Each QR code can only be used once. If you accidentally deleted your eSIM, contact support for a replacement
